TLN - High temperatures and
low snowfall during the winter has
reduced water levels which may
result for Laval to experience a
shortage of drinking water if citizens
do not collaborate and waste
water.
Therefore, citizens are asked to
refrain from watering their lawn,
flowers, washing their cars and
driveways until further notice.
This request applies despite the
current bylaw on lawn watering
based on addresses. Please note
that the lawn watering bylaw makes
provisions for substantial fines for
citizens who do not respect the
watering schedule.
If the situation worsens or if the
community effort is not sufficient,
the City could be forced to take special
measures and ban all outdoor
use of drinking water throughout
its territory.
Please note that this request does
not apply to the daily water use for
hygiene and food purposes.
Digging for water
According to the ministry of
Environment, water flow in the
Mille Iles river -where 400,000
people get their drinking water- is
35 cubic metres per second. The
normal flow rate at this time of
year is 265 cubic metres per second.
Environment Department workers
will dig a trench at the mouth of the
river between Deux Montagnes and
Laval, near the Grand Moulin dam,
removing a natural barrier in the
river. Work is scheduled to begin
July 7, and is expected to have little
impact on the river’s ecosystem.
