The public assembly took place April 7 at Centre Access in Laval-Ouest. Over 60 people were present in the gym transformed into a makeshift conference room for the event. Usually the city council meetings take place at City Hall. However in a move to get the more of the public involved, Mayor Gilles Vaillancourt and the 21 members of the municipal council displaced to a larger venue outside of the Chomedey sector.
Heated at times
The public assembly the evening of April 7 began with about a half hour of the municipal council going through its monthly agenda and then followed with an hour and a half of questions from the public. The topics ranged from the metro extension into Laval, the need for streetlights on narrow Avenue du Bois and the city's snow removal tactics. The questions were mainly directed at Mayor Vaillaincourt who did his best to address the concerns.
One resident's frustration about the lack of proper city sidewalks roused an applause out of the audience. The Mayor responded by saying it was the public's duty to maintain their own properties and the city would continue to do their best.
Open to public
The public assemblies are part of an electoral promise imitated in 2005. The goal was to get more residents of Laval involved in the city and visit all six sectors for those who may not be able to make it to the monthly municipal council meetings held at City Hall - where the public is always welcome. The first public assembly outside of Chomedey district took place in March 2006 in the Saint-Francois sector. It was a success.
The next municipal council meeting will take place 8 p.m. May 5 at City Hall located at 1 place du Souvenir in Chomedey. There are three more sectors yet to host a municipal council meeting. The council plans to visit another sector in the coming months,
